Commitment to a safe, engaged, and inclusive workplace at Aboitiz Equity Ventures

Workplace Gender Equality

Summary

This case study examines the experience of Aboitiz Equity Ventures (AEV), the public holdings company of the Aboitiz Group, in improving workplace gender equality (WGE) as part of their engagement with the Philippine Business Coalition for Women Empowerment (PBCWE). It draws on qualitative and quantitative secondary sources and primary data from interviews and focus group discussions with AEV and PBCWE. Among AEV’s key improvements after engaging with Gender Equality Assessment Results and Strategies (GEARS) in 2022 include improved WGE accountability and improved gender balance at board level.

Highlights

  • AEV’s engagement with PBCWE and GEARS has: (i) enhanced team members understanding of WGE; (ii) increased employee engagement on WGE; (iii) improved company WGE policies and procedures; (iv) improved WGE accountability, and (v) improved gender balance at board level.
  • Key factors that have driven change and WGE improvements at AEV include commitments to global initiatives such as the UN Compact, sustainability agenda and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) framework; sustained leadership, commitment, and accountability; and providing trusted local technical support through PBCWE, which enhanced the organisation’s gender equality knowledge and skills development.
  • While progress has been made towards advancing WGE particularly with regards to gender balance and female leadership, further insight and consultation are needed to address gender pay equity.
