Summary
This fact sheet identifies some of the ways in which gender-based discrimination manifests in the workplace in various forms.
It highlights that gender-based discrimination is still present at all levels in the workplace, and it results in lost opportunities for women and losses in wealth globally, particularly in East Asia and the Pacific region. While legal steps have been taken to make gender-based discrimination in the workplace illegal, there is still much room for improvement, especially in implementation.
Highlights
- Discrimination against women can take many forms, from job postings, recruitment, disparity in maternity vs paternity leave, wage disparity, and performance evaluation bias.
- As women lose opportunities, the world loses wealth. Gender inequality in earnings lead to significant losses in wealth globally, and highest in East Asia and the Pacific.
- All three countries examined have taken legal steps to make gender-based discrimination in the workplace illegal. However, there is still much room for improvement, such as in equal wages for work of equal value, or in industries that women are not allowed to work in.
