Spotlight on gender in South East Asia social investment summit

Bali, 12 February 2020— Gender equality and women’s economic empowerment are high up on the agenda as more than 250 regional and global impact investing leaders gather in Bali on 12 to 14 February to address social and environmental challenges in the region.

The AVPN South East Asia Social Investment Summit brings together impact investing leaders in the region, highlighting the role of impact investors in development.

Gender lens investing (GLI), the practice of using capital to advance gender equality as well as generate financial returns, will be an integrated theme at the Summit, where delegates can showcase experiences, keep abreast of industry trends and find collaborators and investable business opportunities.

The first day of the Summit features a workshop on the definition of and entry points for GLI, as well as applying a gender lens throughout the investment process. A breakout session is scheduled on the second day about GLI as a growing trend in impact investing.

The Summit, with the theme “Leveraging the power of networks,” is organised by AVPN (Asian Venture Philanthropy Network), a unique Pan-Asian network that supports social investors and philanthropists to deploy capital effectively into the impact sector.

To promote gender equality through capital markets, Investing in Women, an initiative of the Australian Government that promotes inclusive growth through women’s economic empowerment in the region, has partnered with AVPN for the Summit.

“Wherever you are on the capital spectrum, there are opportunities to integrate a gender lens, if you look to create stronger social impact along with strong financial returns”, said Julia Newton-Howes, CEO of Investing in Women.

“We are excited to partner with AVPN to inaugurate its first South East Asia conference, which serves to galvanize collective action on the region’s most pressing gender, social, and environmental challenges.”

Naina Subberwal Batra, CEO and Chair of AVPN, echoed this excitement, noting the opportunity through the Summit to “raise collective awareness of the importance and benefits of gender lens investing amongst Asian capital providers.”

“With a membership of more than 600 social investors and our deep local networks in each of the Investing in Women target countries in South East Asia, we are bringing together a vibrant community of practice for the broader social finance community.”
