Perceptions of the Filipino Youth Around STEM and The Need to Understand It
Summary
In the Philippines, girls make up only 43% of the amount enrolled and this trend continues in non-engineering or IT courses, according to Commission on Higher Education (CHED) statistics. However, there’s hope for change as female demographics show an increase from previous years, which may lead them into more technical professions later down the line.
In collaboration with Unilab Foundation’s STEMP+PH and Student Edge’s Youth Insights, the Philippine Business Coalition for Women (PBCWE) has conducted the Youth STEM Research, which is the second phase of the 2019 Women in STEM Baseline Study. This study aims to improve gender equality in the workplace, women’s economic empowerment, and diversity & inclusion by establishing benchmarks of how STEM is positioned in the minds of students and serves as a tool in quantifying the gender gap that still predominantly exists in STEM-related fields.
