The Advance of Impact Investing in South East Asia

Summary

This report effectively follows on from the IW Phase 1 report, The Landscape for Impact Investing in South East Asia, undertaken with the Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN) and Intellecap in 2018.  The report provides analysis of trends in impact investing and GLI in the region, with particular emphasis on Indonesia,  the Philippines and Vietnam.

Key Points

  • Impact investing in South East Asia has continued its growth trajectory over the last few years. The amount of impact capital deployed in the region in the last three years (USD6.7 bn in 2017-2019) is more than half of that deployed in the previous decade (USD11.3 bn in 2007-2016)
  • Private Impact investor activity has increased in the region, as compared to 2007-2016, both in terms of number of deals as well as total capital deployed
  • Development Finance Institutions deal activity over the last three years has also seen the emergence of other economies in attracting DFI capital, notably Myanmar
  • Impact capital deployed with a gender lens has also registered a sharp increase over the last three years—with 39 GLI deals in the region deploying USD 350.0 million in 2017-2019, compared with 33 GLI deals deploying USD 43.3 million from 2007-2016
  • Indonesia remains the largest market for impact investing activity in the region, and recorded almost half of the GLI deals observed.
