Australian Diplomat Allaster Cox on the economic benefits of gender equality in Indonesia

Stories Videos /30 September 2019

Studies show that Indonesia could increase its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 9% if it improves gender equality by 2025. In an interview with media and research company Katadata Indonesia, Allaster Cox, Deputy Head of Mission of the Australian Embassy in Jakarta, shared his views on workplace gender equality and closing the gender gap in Indonesia.

“Many studies internationally have shown that it [gender equality] boosts economic growth and boosts the performance of individual businesses. Having more women, including in the more senior positions, has been shown to boost company profits, to boost happiness levels in the workplace. And I think in many countries— both in developing and in developed countries—the evidence is clear that gender equality is a plus for economic growth,” said Cox.
