The Department of Communication Research at the University of the Philippines Diliman College of Mass Communication is the country’s leading communication and media research academic institution. It is recognised by the Philippine government as a Center for Excellence in Communication.
In 2018-2019, Investing in Women supported the Department to carry out research on Gender Representation in Philippine Advertising. From an analysis of 500 TV, 497 radio, and 256 print ads, the research found that while women’s objectification was no longer prevalent in Philippine ads, stereotypes on gender roles and activities persist.
The project is under the Media Monitoring Laboratory of the Department’s Salik Research Hub, which includes a focus on Philippine media content—investigating the principles, procedures and practices behind its production, as well as how people receive and engage with such content.
