Investing in Women Gender Lens Advisory Group
Investing in Women was initiated in 2016 by the Australian Government to catalyse inclusive economic growth and poverty reduction in South East Asia. Investing in Women aims to accelerate the growth of investment capital with a gender lens and foster gender lens investing talent in Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam.
The Criterion Institute, along with a consortium of some of the top gender lens investing advisors in the world, are working with Investing in Women and its partners across a set of key areas to support this accelerated growth in Southeast Asia. The Investing in Women Gender Lens Advisory group is composed of Joy Anderson & Kristen Yee (Criterion Institute), Suzanne Biegel (Catalyst at Large), Naina Subberwal Batra (Asian Venture Philanthropy Network), Vicki Saunders (SheEO), Rebecca Fries (Value for Women), and Valerie Hudson (WomanStats). Led by the Criterion Institute, this powerhouse of individual and organisational expertise represents more than 40 years combined experience in gender and gender lens investing and includes some of the most significant catalysts of the gender lens investing ecosystem globally.
Together, the Investing in Women Gender Lens Advisory Group collaborates to engage, connect and amplify actors in the gender lens investing ecosystem; build the capacity of translators between gender and finance; provide technical and advisory support to the Investing in Women, its impact investing partners and where applicable, the stakeholders in the broader impact investing ecosystem; and raise investor awareness and education on gender lens investing in Southeast Asia.
Engage, connect and amplify actors in the ecosystem
Fields are composed of ideas, activity and people (organizations). The field of gender lens investing across Southeast Asia is at a point where, to accelerate growth, actors need support, community, and a common framework to work from to use finance as a tool for social change.
The Investing in Women Gender Lens Advisory Group is facilitating the development of ideas, activity, and people starting with a series of field-building events in Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam. From these events, the Advisory Group will support and amplify efforts of those working to build the field of gender lens investing in Southeast Asia in addition to promoting Investing in Women’s work within the global gender lens investing ecosystem.
Build the capacity of translators between gender and finance
Gender lens investing takes a specific skill set, and requires collaboration between people that understand gender patterns and those who understand capital markets. As people embedded within these fields often speak different languages and are not used to working together, translators are required for gender lens investing stakeholders to bridge the gaps that exist and establish pathways for communication and collaboration.
The Investing in Women Gender Lens Advisory Group will build the capacity of people taking on the task of translator between different stakeholders in the field.
Technical support to impact investing partners and tools for investors more broadly
Demonstration portfolios and supporting investors to analyze gender is a crucial means through which to build the field of gender lens investing.
The Investing in Women Gender Lens Advisory Group supports the Investing in Women impact investing partners to integrate a gender lens into their investment practice as a means of demonstrating to the wider field what is possible. The Advisory Group is working to transform the lessons learned with investing partners into tools for the field more broadly to support a wider audience to invest with a gender lens.
Investor awareness and education on gender lens investing in Southeast Asia
Despite the growing popularity of gender lens investing, in all its forms, efforts are required to increase awareness amongst the general investor population. This is crucial if more and more capital is to move with a gender lens.
The Investing in Women Gender Lens Advisory Group is designing an investor engagement strategy with specific events at AVPN 2018 to demonstrate the opportunity and ability to moderate risk through investing with a gender lens. At AVPN 2018, investors will be given five strategies through which they can aim to shift their investment practices.
